LANCE ARMSTRONG-We all know him, we all know what he did. However, we don't really understand what he did. He won the Tour de France 7 times in a row. He crushed the world's best cyclists in a race where you bike 120 miles a day for 3 weeks straight. An it's not on a flat road the entire time. These guys bike in the fucking Alps with inclines that would make normal people say "fuck that". Year after year, Lance made the world's best look like they were riding big wheelers. Nobody had dominated cycling like that. Ever. He overcame cancer and brought his "game" to a whole new level that no one thought was possible. He became the iconic symbol for America with his "never give up" attitude. We all like to see people when they Livestrong.

1. MICHAEL PHELPS-Nobody watches swimming. The 2008 Summer Olympics changed that. We all were interested in watching this guy named Michael Phelps literally dominate every event that he entered. He won a total of 8 gold medals in the Olympics. That's the most medals for any one person in the Olympics. (that goes back all the way to 1896, when the modern olympics started). Swimming takes an extreme amount of athletic ability and thats why I believe Michael Phelps is the best athlete in the world. Even before the 2008 Olympics he was winning nearly every event he entered. He gave all of us something to cheer about and look forward to during his magical run during those Olympics. 8 gold medals will never be topped in a single Olympics ever again. No other athlete has the ability to compete in 8 different events and dominate the field like Phelps did. He made it look simple. It wasn't.

A Review of this Year's NBA Playoffs

If you read my blog that I wrote before the playoffs started, I predicted it could be the best of all time. In hindsight, it probably wasn't. This year's playoffs brought up more questions than it did answers. I want to keep this blog nice and short so I will not talk about the whole Lebron and the Heat Situation. In fact, I am just going to leave the finals out of this. If you have been living in a box for the last week or like hockey, the Mavs won the title, 1st in franchise history. I will talk about that in a future post.

Derrick Rose single handily beat the Pacers in the first round, then went on to beat the most annoying team in the league, the Hawks. The favorite to win the Western Conference was the Lakers as they started off well by beating the Hornets. (Chris Paul is officially my favorite player to watch.) However, they ran into an 7 foot giant. Some people call him the Germantor, swish, but we can all call him clutch. On a side note, what the fuck is wrong with Kobe? He looks like a grandpa on the court and he is only 32 years old. And to all the people who STILL thinks he is the best in the league. Shut up. Please. Ya he was good the last couple of years but he is not the best player in the league now. The Oklahoma City Thunder played very well and reached the Western Conference Finals. That team is super young. I normally hate it when people think that just because a team is young, that they will do well the next season. However, I think that the OKC thunder will only get better and Kevin Durant will have a breakout season. The Memphis Grizzlies were the most random team in this year's playoffs. Why? First they beat the top seeded Spurs. Easily. Most fans cant even name 3 player on this team. Then they took OKC to seven games. The funny part is that even though the Grizzlies were playing well, nobody really jumped on the bandwagon. It could be because they were from Memphis and nobody likes that city. Or that we all knew they would eventually lose and we wanted to see the Mavs, Lakers, or OKC win the west.

The NBA. However, America has never really been sold on soccer, ever. But why is that? Here's what I think. This may sound harsh, but soccer started out (and still is) a poor man's sport. All you need is a large open field with goals and a ball. It can be played with no shoes, no shin guards and no net for the goals. This is the exact reason it is so damn popular around the world. Almost all of Africa lives in poverty so this is the perfect sport for them. Its cheap, fun, and passes the time.

This is the exact reason why many Americans dislike playing or watching soccer. We feel like anyone can play and be good at the sport. As for watching it on TV or in person, I think many Americans would rather watch paint dry or grass grow before watching a game. Soccer is extremely slow paced and lacks exciting moments. In my opinion, soccer will never become mainstream in America. Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Hockey are sports that most Americans would watch before soccer.

As for the rest of the world, you can continue to play soccer, we don't care.

Mavs vs Heat. Start of a New Era?

This year's finals is the first in a long time where neither team has a had a dominate low post scorer. Gone are the days of Shaq, Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Kevin Garnett. In the previous 30 years, the undisputed most important player on the team was the big man. This is changing. Fast. In the past few drafts, teams have bypassed big men and elected to pick point guards to build their teams around. Recent high point guard draft picks include, D Rose, Tyreke Evans, Ricky Rubio (we will see what happens there), and John Wall. How does this shift in strategy affect offense? Well, The Association is becoming less about team offense and more about individual talent. Besides the pick and roll (which is used by nearly every team on the majority of possessions), I hardly see any other offenses being run.

With the introduction of freak athletes like Lebron James, coaches around the league find that isolation play s, if used sparingly, can be just as effective. I believe that the future of the NBA will consist of one or two players that can drive to the basket at will, and three perimeter shooters waiting for the kick out pass. The big man is officially gone, don't be surprised if you see more hybrid players like Dirk Nowitzki.

The NBA....Where New Beginnings Happen!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://eriksandberg.blogspot.com/2011/06/mavs-vs-heat-start-of-new-era.html' title='Mavs vs Heat. The color of Hockey pucks. Black? Really? This is one of the reasons why I hate watching Hockey. Its hard to follow the puck because it blends in with players skates and sticks. On paper, it makes sense, right? A black puck on white ice. This could not be farther from the truth, the puck becomes blurry on TV and moves around so fucking fast it becomes a job just to follow it. I think they should change the color of the puck to orange. This will allow it stand out. Change the color of the puck, or continue to be the least popular of the 4 major sports.

2. Baseball is way too fucking slow. Ok, so the pitcher pitches the ball, umpire calls a strike. Then the batter does not agree with the call, so he gives the umpire a few words. At this time the catcher WALKS out to the mound to chat with the pitcher about whatever. While this is going on, WE HAVE TO WATCH it! By the time this is over it has been a minute and a half. That may not seem like a lot of time but it happens dozens of times during the course of a game. Managers do their part to make the pace of the game slow too. As you know, every time their is a pitching change it is the manager's job to go to the mound and take the pitcher out (which is stupid, but I wont get into that). Anyways, about 90 percent of managers are fat asses but that does mean that they have to set the world record for slowest walkers. Speed up the game, or lose fans, especially young ones.

More to come, I promise!
A lot of stuff pisses me off in sports. The older we get the more we conform to society. Our attitudes about ourselves are shaped by what other people think of us. Thanks to the internet and social media sites, humans are in CONSTANT contact with each other. Never before in the history in the world have we been more connected with our emotions, world events, and news. Is this a good thing? Its hard to say but it is definitely different than every generation that has come before us. This connection between everyone has its ups and downs. We hear about some fucked up shit that happens on the side of the world but we also hear some amazing stories about human life. Just some stuff to ponder about.

Ask Questions.
Get Answers.

NBA Playoffs, Best Ever?

The 2010-2011 playoffs will be the most interesting and anticipated we have seen in 20 years. There are many stories that many of us are waiting for. How will the "Big 3" and the Heat perform as a team when it really counts? Will Phil Jackson finish up his coaching career with his fourth 3-peat? Can the aging Celtics muster out one more Championship run? Will Derrick Rose provide us with the second coming of Jordan's playoff magic? The NBA has more superstars than it has ever had and there are a handful of teams that have loaded up with fabulous talent. So if you are a diehard NBA fan or a former fan that has found the NBA style "boring" in recent years, WATCH THE PLAYOFFS!!! So many players with so much to prove and reputations on the line.
